The invention discloses an electric ship propulsion system and a control method. A method of controlling an electric marine vessel propulsion system configured to propel a marine vessel and powered by a power storage system includes presenting a plurality of user-selectable power mode options on a user interface, including at least a reduced power mode and an emergency power mode. When the user selects the reduced power mode, at least one auxiliary device utilizing power from the power storage system is automatically turned off and the propulsion system is controlled so as not to exceed the first speed limit. When the user selects the emergency power mode, at least one auxiliary device utilizing power from the power storage system is turned off and the propulsion system is controlled so as not to exceed a second speed limit that is lower than the first speed limit.
