A system for controlling a capstan assembly includes a rotatable capstan drum having an attachment cable. The capstan motor is configured to rotate the capstan drum. The sensor is configured to generate a signal indicative of a number of layers of the capstan cable on the capstan drum. The capstan controller is configured to receive a control input requesting selected rotation of the capstan drum, receive a signal from the sensor, determine a number of layers of capstan cable disposed on the capstan drum, and generate a control command to control the capstan motor to rotate the capstan drum based on the control input and the number of layers of capstan cable. The control command rotates the capstan drum to generate a substantially constant linear velocity based on the selected control input independent of the number of layers determined to be disposed on the capstan drum.
