A system for automatically changing a first road lane of a vehicle to a second road lane to maintain an automated driving unit engaged. The system includes an ECU to inspect a location of the vehicle to define map segments of a first road lane and a second road lane. The first road lane is a main lane occupied by a vehicle and the second road lane is an available lane. The ECU detects whether the availability of the first road lane is poor. The system also includes a sensor to monitor availability of the first road lane. The system also includes a background unit to mark the first road lane in the event that a poor availability of the first road lane is detected, thereby recording the first road lane in an instance counter (IC), and designate the first road lane as a non-preferred lane in the event that an occurrence threshold of the IC is reached. The system also includes an automatic lane change (ALC) unit to move the vehicle to a second roadway lane.
