A method and system for estimating wear of a drive belt of a continuously variable transmission disposed in a vehicle are disclosed. The method includes determining a first belt wear impact factor based on at least one continuously variable transmission operating parameter of the vehicle; determining a second belt wear impact factor based on at least one engine operating parameter of the vehicle; applying the first belt wear impact factor and the second belt wear impact factor to a belt life representation parameter to obtain an adjusted belt life representation parameter; and adjusting a total tape life representation parameter based on the adjusted tape life representation parameter to obtain an updated total tape life representation parameter.
