In the event that a risk of rollover has been detected, a predetermined hierarchical cascade of a plurality of different automatic control interventions is carried out on the cascade one after the other in a temporally increasing manner in order to influence the driving situation until no risk of rollover has occurred. The cascade arrangement provides for limiting the steering speed in the first stage, limiting the steering angle in the second stage, further limiting the steering angle in the third stage, and active braking intervention.
