The present disclosure provides management of transmission transitions in a wheel torque based actuator torque determination system. Systems and control methods may provide for determining a TrnAin torque request from a desired vehicle acceleration in a vehicle that utilizes a WTC architecture to allow smooth transitions between different transmission states, such as a torque converter bypass clutch state, and shifts between transmission gear ratios. The method provides a consistent and smooth vehicle acceleration profile during transmission state transitions. The method also provides the ability to consistently track the desired vehicle acceleration from a virtual driver demand source, such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous vehicle, or remote parking, without the need to allocate any additional resources to account for transmission state transitions. The proposed method is applicable to any TC-based automatic transmission driveline, such as conventional driveline, MHT, P4HEV or even BEV driveline with the motor located on the impeller side of the torque converter.
