The invention relates to an intelligent vehicle and control logic for managing faults of a dual independent drive unit axle powertrain. Control systems for operating a dual independent drive unit (DIDU) powertrain, methods of making/operating such systems, and electrically driven vehicles with fault management and mitigation of DIDUs axles are presented. A method of operating a motor vehicle having a DIDU axle includes monitoring first and second drive units (DUs) that are independently operable to drive respective wheels through respective axle axles of the DIDU axle. The vehicle controller receives an indication of a fault condition in the first DU from the fault sensing module and in response determines a fault type of the fault condition. The controller determines a current speed of the vehicle and determines a respective torque limit for each DIDUU drive unit based on the fault type and the current vehicle speed. The torque output of the first DU is concomitantly constrained to the first torque limit when the torque output of the second DU is constrained to the second torque limit.
