The invention provides a self-adaptive cruise system and method. The system comprises a radar unit and a camera shooting unit. The radar unit comprises a first millimeter-wave radar and a second millimeter-wave radar which are respectively arranged on two sides of the front end and/or the rear end of the vehicle; the camera shooting unit is arranged between the first millimeter-wave radar and the second millimeter-wave radar and is used for detecting image information of the front end and/or the rear end of the vehicle; in the close-range working mode, the radar unit has a first measurement range; when the radar unit is in the middle-distance working mode, the radar unit has a second measurement range; in the long-distance working mode, the radar unit has a third measurement range; the third measurement range is larger than the second measurement range, and the second measurement range is larger than the first measurement range. According to the self-adaptive cruise control system, the cost can be reduced; the environment nearby the vehicle is comprehensively and completely covered, and effective guarantee is provided for safe driving of the vehicle.
