The present disclosure provides an acceptable zone for automatic hitching taking into account system performance. A vehicle hitch assist system includes a controller that determines a trailer target area rearward of a vehicle. The trailer target area is located in a left vehicle steering limit and a right vehicle steering limit; a left boundary and a right boundary are defined in a lateral direction between a left boundary and a right boundary spaced inwardly from one of the left side vehicle steering limit and the right side vehicle steering limit, respectively, and a minimum movement limit and a maximum sensing limit are defined in a longitudinal direction. The controller further identifies a coupler of a trailer within the trailer target area and outputs a steering signal to the vehicleto steer the vehicle to align a hitch ball of the vehicle with the coupler during movement of the vehicle.
