The invention discloses a cross beam lifting tool and a method for hoisting a pump tower of an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) ship with the displacement capacity of 172,000m<3>. The cross beam lifting tool comprises a lifting tool body and two lifting rings, wherein the two hanging rings are arranged on the left side and the right side of the lower end of the lifting tool body respectively; two bilaterally symmetric brackets are arranged at the lower end of the lifting tool body and on the inner sides of the lifting rings; a connecting part is arranged at the upper end of the center of the lifting tool body; and two through hole are formed in the connecting part. According to the cross beam lifting tool and method, when the pump tower is hoisted, a theoretical interval between the bottom end of the pump tower and a dome deck of a ship body is increased, the influences from uncertain factors such as tides and wind waves are overcome, and smooth hoisting of the pump tower can be ensured.
