The invention relates to a cooling circuit for a motor vehicle, comprising a cooling-medium pump (1), which circulates a cooling medium in the cooling circuit, and a hydrodynamic retarder (8), which comprises a bladed primary wheel and a bladed secondary wheel, which together form a working chamber that can be filled with a working medium, the working medium being the cooling medium. The cooling circuit has a main circuit (7), in which the cooling-medium pump and a drive motor of the motor vehicle or another unit for cooling by means of the cooling medium, and a heat exchanger for removing the heat of the cooling medium absorbed from the drive motor or the other unit, are positioned. The cooling-medium pump circulates the cooling medium in the main circuit. The hydrodynamic retarder is positioned in a secondary branch (7) of the cooling circuit, comprising a feed, which branches off from the main circuit at a branching point and ends in the hydrodynamic retarder, and a return, which proceeds from the hydrodynamic retarder and ends in the main circuit at a junction point. The invention is characterized in that the return (14) ends upstream of the branching point (13) of the feed as viewed in the flow direction of the cooling medium in the main circuit, but on the same side of the cooling-medium pump, or ends in the main circuit at the branching point of the feed.
