The invention discloses a parallel type hybrid power system and an operation method thereof. The parallel type hybrid power system comprises an engine, a motor coaxially arranged with the engine and connected with a first clutch, and a speed changing box, wherein the motor is powered by an external power source or a high-voltage battery. The speed changing box is coaxially arranged with the motor and connected with a second clutch. When the parallel type hybrid power system is matched with a manual mechanical speed changing box, a clutch separation mechanism is not refitted, the whole vehicle control is not changed, the gear shifting operation is easy, and the operation is consistent with the operation of a traditional neutral gear vehicle. When the parallel type hybrid power system is matched with an automatic mechanical speed changing box, in the gear shifting process, the rotation inertia of a motor rotor on a shaft of the speed changing box does not have an influence on the speed changing box, and the requirement on the quality of a traditional vehicle AMT speed changing box is met. In addition, when the vehicle is started, the motor and the engine can provide power simultaneously, and the starting power of the vehicle is sufficient.
