The invention relates to a steering system (L) for at least one trailing axle (An) of a vehicle (F), comprising a steering angle sensor (Sa) for detecting a steering angle (a) of wheels (Rv) of a front axle (Av) of the vehicle; a travel speed sensor (Sv) for detecting a travel speed (v) of the vehicle (F); an electric motor (M) for driving a hydraulic pump (P) which is in turn connected to at least one working cylinder (Z) for coupling the wheels (Rn) of said trailing axle (An); and a control device (C) that is or can be connected to the steering angle sensor (Sa) and travel speed sensor (Sv), as well as to the electric motor (M), and is designed to determine, from the steering angle (a) and travel speed (v), a castor angle ( ) of wheels (Rn) on the trailing axle (An) of the vehicle (F), and to activate the motor (M) based on this castor angle ( ), the working cylinder (Z) comprising a position sensor (Sp) for detecting a central position (G) of the piston (K) thereof, in which the wheels (Rn) of the trailing axle (An) are in a straight travel position, and in response to this detected central position (G) of the piston (K), an impulse valve (I) can be shifted from a working position (A), in which a fluid flow between the working cylinder (Z) and the pump (P) is released, into a main position (N) in which a fluid flow between the working cylinder (Z) and the pump (P) is prevented, such that the piston (K) is hydraulically blocked in the straight travel position of the trailing axle (An) wheels (Rn). The invention also relates to a corresponding method for steering the wheels (Rn) of at least one trailing axle (An) of a vehicle (F).
