The invention provides a vehicle flow detection method based on background modeling, and relates to a vehicle flow detection method. By the vehicle flow detection method based on background modeling, the problem that the existing vehicle flow detection method is affected by change of light rays and cannot detect vehicles which do not move is solved. The vehicle flow detection method based on background modeling comprises the following steps of (1) judging whether backgrounds are updated or not by using a ratio of frame difference to a background difference value; (2) extracting a foreground image and eliminating shadows by using an HSV (hue, saturation and value) characteristic method; and (3) transforming images by using a Hough transform method and tracking and counting vehicles by using a minimum enclosing rectangle method. By the vehicle flow detection method based on background modeling, the problems that backgrounds are affected by change of light rays and vehicles which do not move cannot be detected by frame difference are solved.
