A conventional truck box (OEM build) having a box floor, side walls and a pivotal tail gate is supplemented by two tail gate latch extensions. Each tail gate latch extension includes a hook assembly at one end with a clevis style adapter at the other end. The hook assemblies are designed to be attached to the tail gate latch pins located near the top of the truck box assembly at the tail gate ends. The clevises (latch assemblies) are designed as two pronged forks, housing rollers between the forked ends that will be latched into the tail gate latching mechanisms when the tail gate is in a partially closed position. Together the hook assemblies and latch assemblies form two tail gate extensions that are installed at each end of the tail gate at the latching positions. This allows for the tail gate to be partially closed securing larger items in the truck box that would normally prevent the tail gate from latching in the fully closed position (Example # 1 - ATV in a 6 foot truck box). This partially closed tail gate position is advantageous for both the added security of large items in the truck box and the prevention of tail gate damage caused by vehicle operation while the tail gate is in the fully down (open) position.
