AbstractRecent research suggests that the average time spent travelling by the Dutch population has increased over the past decades. However, different data sources show different levels of increase. This paper explores possible causes for this increase. They include a rise in incomes, which has probably resulted in an increase in both travel costs and benefits, the benefits of additional travel having increased more rapidly than costs, and possibly the increased comfort level of cars. Finally, the new opportunities offered to travellers to make better use of their travelling time, such as working in the train, might also have made a contribution.
