Abstract Energetic electrons trapped in Jovian and Saturnian magnetospheres show field-aligned bidirectional anisotropy in their pitch angle distributions. We use Monte-Carlo simulation to develop the recirculation model comprising four diffusion processes and show that observed features of trapped electrons can be reproduced by this model. The principal new ingredient of this model is the cross-L diffusion that operates in low altitudes driven probably by the electric field of intense MHD waves confined below the height of the maximum Alfven speed.
