AbstractA method for aerosol parameter estimation with changing observation angle of ground based polarization radiometer is proposed. Phase functions of the aerosol particles on size distribution and refractive index of the aerosol are in concern. In general, phase function of Mie scattering shows a valley in around 90° of scattering angle so that observation angle of ground based polarization radiometer is used to be set at the 90° against solar elevation angle. Relation between aerosol parameters (size distribution and refractive index) and scattering angle of which the valley of phase function is situated are investigated. Dependency of the imaginary part of refractive index is dominant followed by the real part of the refractive index and the size distribution. This implied that it is possible to estimate the imaginary part of refractive index, most difficult in estimation of aerosol parameter with changing observation angle of ground polarization radiometer. Some experimental results support the proposed method. From process observation data it showed that the retrieval precisions of the aerosol size distribution and refractive index in the scattering angle 85° are superior to the other scattering angles.
