Abstract Comprehension of the current and desired conditions of the built environment in tropical university campuses is crucial for tailoring context-specific interventions that aim to improve walkability. In regard to this, the present study adopted a community needs assessment approach to examine the availability, adequacy and needs for pedestrian-oriented built environment attributes using a case study of the University of Malaya, a tropical campus located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. An online cross-sectional survey was conducted among the campus community between May and September 2019. The percentage of walkability items that the participants considered as ‘insufficient’ and ‘needed’ was defined as ‘needs’ and expressed as adjusted scores (AS). Multivariate logistic regression was employed to evaluate the independent effect of sociodemographic characteristics on the total needs scores. Out of the 504 acquired responses, components belong to street connectivity and accessibility (AS: 88.69%), institutional support from the university (AS: 88.53%), land use mixes (AS: 83.53%), experience (AS: 82.06%), and pedestrian infrastructure and street furniture (AS: 78.10%) were identified as top five needs of the campus community to walk on campus. Furthermore, the results of the multivariate analyses suggested that age groups, occupation, monthly income, and travel distance were significant predictors of the needs scores of studied walkability domains. In conclusion, the findings provide valuable insights and recommendations regarding the priority walking needs of the campus community that call for deliberative interventions in transportation policies, programmes, and infrastructure to promote sustainable, environmentally-friendly mobility within the tropical campus setting.
