Abstract Resonance cones have been used in the laboratory for measuring electron density, -temperature, -drift motion and nonthermal effects. The evaluation of resonance cones is based on the kinetic theory of magnetized plasmas. It is demonstrated how this technique can be transferred to ionospheric applications.
