Abstract Radiation from ultracompact binary stars must be modulated due to Doppler effect and the effect of relativistic beaming. Amplitude of modulation is determined by velocity of binary components, by geometry of the emitting region and by shape of the spectrum. The spherical geometry-flat disk transitions are to be expected in ultracompact binaries during changes of accretion rate onto the compact star. The amplitude of modulation of the emission from the flat can be half as much again as from the spherically-symmetric source. Under reliable parameters of the ultracompact binary 4U 1820-30 these effects can provide ≌ 1% modulation of the observed X-ray flux.
