Abstract We report new results from recent experimental studies on physico-chemical effects induced in frozen gases and mixtures (CO, CO2, CH4, H2O and SO2) simulating ice targets in space (frosts on external planets and satellites, and comets). In particular we have studied, by UV-Vis-IR spectroscopy, the formation of new molecules, the alteration of band profiles and the spectral behavior of the original compounds. The ratio CO/CO2 has been measured, as a function of ion fluence, in several frozen gases (or mixtures). These results are discussed in the light of their relevance in some planetary environments. In particular, we suggest that ion irradiation, which is especially intense at Io, can modify the spectral properties of frozen SO2 thus contributing to explain the spectral behavior of this Jovian moon. The production, by cosmic ion irradiation, of CO and CO2 at the surfaces and/or in the atmospheres of Titan, Triton, Pluto and Charou is discussed. Some predictions of the expected CO/CO2 ratio at the surfaces and/or in the atmospheres of those objects are provided.
