AbstractThis review is intended to highlight the current understanding of gas dynamic and chemical factors in the formation of discrete energetic volume elements and elucidate their role in ignition and growth to detonation of explosives. Although most knowledge has been gained from studies using homogeneous, gaseous explosives, similar phenomena are observed in condensed explosives and in heterogeneous mixtures of fuel drops with gaseous oxidizers. These similarities are discussed.
