Abstract The X-ray telescopes ART-P and ART-S together with the French designed Sigma are the principal instruments on the GRANAT international orbital observatory for high energy astrophysics. ART-P consists of four identical modules. The detector contains a position sensitive MWPC together with a coded mask of URA type, which enables imaging with 6′ resolution in the energy range 4–60 keV. In the range 4–100 keV the telescope works as a spectrometer. The geometric sensitive area of ART-P is 4 × 630 cm2, the field of view 1.8° × 1.8° FWHM. The ART-S telescope includes four detectors based on spectroscopic MWPC's. The collimators of the telescope can work in a rocking mode “ON” and “OFF” the target, which enables the study of timing and spectral parameters of X-ray sources in the pointing mode. The energy range is 3–100 keV, the geometric sensitive area is 4 × 625 cm2.
