AbstractThe eco-efficiency of railway transport is calculated using the Material Input Per Service-unit (MIPS) indicator. Two case railway lines are analysed; a single-track line and a double-track line. The results show that the railway infrastructure is the most significant factor in the consumption of abiotic materials, even at a high traffic density. The impact of the rolling stock was higher on water and air consumption.
