Abstract The knowledge of diurnal cycle of rainfall (DCR), is crucial for meticulous understanding of the rain climatology, and thus quite imperative for devising precise rainfall forecasting models which is important for future satellite communication channel modelling. The location of Kolkata is characterized by stratiform, convective as well as mixed type of rainfall during different seasons of the year. The rain diversity prevailing over Kolkata, located at the verge of the tropics, prompts critical investigation of rain and rain-induced impairments. The present study utilizes 4 years data of ground-based observations over Kolkata. The present study not only highlights significant features of DCR during the pre-monsoon and the monsoon days but also indicates the distinct variability of rain-induced propagation impairments associated with the rain drop size distribution pattern.
