Abstract Recent advances in research have shown that the use of a non-gravity environment may advance the frontiers of science and technology in a way that will bring progress and change to man. An environment free of gravitational forces is of interest not only in space but also in the physics and chemistry of materials and processes. The stratospheric balloon may be used to support these endeavors. A new system has been developed and successfully demonstrated by carrying it to the upper portions of the stratosphere and then releasing it to achieve a microgravity environment for almost 60 seconds. The MIKROBA system, developed by OHB-System, has successfully carried several experiments which required more than the 6 to 10 seconds of microgravity achievable from other drop facilities. This paper will describe this new system and review the quality of the most recent flight experience. It is anticipated that this approach will provide a cost effective mechanism for achieving microgravity conditions much longer than other drop facilities.
