Abstract In recent years the economies of developed countries have become more interdependent. The resulting increase in intra-European trade flows has benefited all modes of transport, particularly short-sea shipping but most of all river-sea transport. The technical innovation of ‘box-shaped’ short-sea mini-bulkers has enabled river-sea transport to compete with roll-on/ roll-off and container ships by avoiding break of bulk at a coastal seaport. This has important regional consequences in hitherto land-locked areas with navigable rivers and canals. River-sea transport pollutes less and can also provide an alternative to congested roads and railways. Door-to-door journeys by river-sea transport seem destined for future growth.
