Abstract Classical radial diffusion alone cannot explain the composition, intensity and anisotropy of energetic ions and electrons observed in planetary magnetospheres. This paper reviews proposed non-adiabatic acceleration mechanisms and discuss if they can fill the gap between predictions of the radial diffusion model and the observations. The non-adiabatic acceleration models discussed here include the particle motions in the current sheet, wave- particle interactions, field-aligned electric field, recirculation, and magnetic pumping.
