Abstract This paper presents a study on bending performance of transversely isotropic functionally graded (FG) plates under transverse mechanical load. Computational and analytical tools are used to study the behavior of FG plates under bending. Analytical modeling is based on Reddy's third order theory (TOT) [1] and a finite element computational tool ABAQUS [2] is used to model FG material through user defined subroutine UMAT. Elastic properties of FG material are based on power law and are varying across the thickness of the plate while Poisson's ratio is kept constant. Results from computational tools for an FG plate with standard boundary and loading conditions are validated with literature and TOT. After validation, FG plate with various boundary conditions and shape are analyzed.
