Abstract The well known production mechanisms of the diffuse galactic γ-emission make dark clouds combined with γ-ray measurements a usefull tool in exploring the lokal cosmic ray background. A dark cloud map, established by combining the Lynds /1/ and the Feitzinger & Stüwe /2/ dark cloud catalogues, shows that the local interstellar medium is responsible for ≈ 15% (galactic center) to ≤ 50% (anticenter) of the measured γ-radiation. Parallel to the improving resolution of future γ-ray telescopes the mapping of dark clouds must be improved in order to optimize future correlation studies. Therefore a computer aided mapping technique with a resolution down to the arcminute range, which also allows distance determinations, has been developed.
