Abstract A conceptual model of logistics incorporating consumers, producer/shippers, carriers and governments is formulated. Private and public sector problems, including vehicle routing, inventory management, fleet selection and facility location, are identified. We argue that logistics interfaces intimately with production planning and marketing. Stochasticity, temporal factors, multiple modes, multiple objectives and multiple products are outlined as key dimensions of logistics models. Models of vehicle routing, facility location, integrated logistics within a firm and shipper/carrier interactions are reviewed. Promising research opportunities in algorithmic development, incorporation of more realistic assumptions and integration of logistics models are outlined.
