Abstract Three short-term increases observed in the nucleonic component of galactic cosmic rays from April 2 to April 6, 1979 are investigated. Their relation to mesoscale structures of the solar wind and to bidirectional fluxes of low energy (E ≲ 1 MeV) cosmic rays is analyzed. For each event an isolated rotational structure has been identified in the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). A good correspondence between such magnetic behaviour and short-term cosmic-ray increases is found. Moreover, cosmic-ray features (nucleonic intensity increases and bidirectional fluxes) suggest for the associated solar-wind structure a spatial dimension bigger than that derived from the IMF-rotational period only.
