Research and military operations in polar regions require reliable transportation methods for logistics support and personnel movement; during July of 1964 series of performance tests was conducted to determine and evaluate feasibility of air cushion vehicle concept as transportation method in polar regions; data and specifications of test vehicle, weather and soil conditions, and vehicle performance, in particular, obstacle-crossing capacity; concept appears to be highly feasible, because of its independence from surface trafficability characteristics, its ability to negotiate obstacles smoothly, and its travel speed that can be attained.
