First fully automatic boilers used at sea in British ships were in H. M.S. Tiger, using spill burning system with Admiralty suspended flame wide range registers fitted to 3-drum type boilers; limitations in design of fuel system, combustion control and boiler water level regulation became apparent during sea trials; trials and ensuing development work on modern frigate boiler shore installation at Admiralty Fuel Experimental Station, Haslar are described.
