Because fuel accounts for high percentage of railroad operating costs, interest is developing in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG); use of LPG is discussed in terms of cost, availability, and methods of adaptation to present locomotive engines; suitability of LPG for diesel engines is shown; spark ignition LPG engines, and dual-fuel LP G engines; tabulation of average prices for diesel fuel and LPG.
