Adoption of advanced computer cybernetic techniques has enabled railroads to improve efficiency of their operations; development of computer and cybernetic applications on railroads can be seen as advancing in 4 or 5 yr cycle through first generation (1955 to 1959), second generation (1960 to 1964), and third generation (1965 to 1969) with use of third-generation computers and communications hardware, with nanosecond speeds, larger main and secondary memories, and far greater degree of component reliability; direct benefits by reduced dock-to-dock transit time, more reliable scheduling, better distribution of freight equipment, and in general overall higher quality of rail transport services.
