Discusses relative merits of four types of storage battery for electric-traction purposes; Plante and Faure lead batteries; relative performances of different types are considered in relation to heavy freight traffic, suburban passenger traffic with motor coaches, and long-distance high-speed passenger traffic; results are compared with steam-locomotive operation, and conclusion is drawn that advent of lead-zinc accumulator will enable this form of traction to show economical results superior to that of steam locomotives for any class of traffic.
