Abort is defined as deliberate or unintentional termination of mission followed by return to earth of payload; examples of each type are given; factors which must be considered are how to specify and sense abort condition, how much fuel should be put onboard vehicle for abort purposes, what size and kind of rocket engines are best suited for each mission, and what compromise is incurred due to other mission requirements; atmospheric, suborbital and superorbital abort, aborts from translunar trajectories and from lunar landings.
