In wreckage of crashed aircraft, fragments are often found to show signs of fire, and it may be of great importance to determine whether fire preceded or followed crash; if certain number of fire-marked fragments should be found to fit on to one another, this may be due to chance or to marking before fracture; study provides means of estimating probability of given configurations on hypothesis of random distribution of marked pieces.
