Concern is with question whether ship design should aim at most economical or at most profitable ship; it can be shown that in each case main dimensions become different; evidently true scale for most advantageous ship is not profitableness ("banker's criterion"), but economic efficiency, called here "shipowner's criterion"; with some simplification this is equivalent to total annual cost per value unit produced.
