Aircraft, spacecraft, surface ships, submarines, etc, have configuration, overall loads, and leading dimensions of structure specified within limits by performance requirements, aerodynamics and hydrodynamics, launch- and pay-loads; design-sciences synthesize problems through use of design indices, which combine external loads and leading dimensions, employing idealized structural configurations (stiffened box beams and cylinders) as representative structures to establish optimum designs from which comparative efficiencies of various materials can be evaluated; examples show application of approach to evaluation and improvement of material properties in terms of their potential applications.
