Concept of modifying existing X-15 research vehicle into delta wing air vehicle configuration was investigated; technical analysis dealt with wing, vertical tail configurations, propellant tankage, and landing gear redesigns; maximum velocities were determined and structural temperatures and materials were defined for representative design missions; wind tunnel test results are discussed, with results of structural testing of representative wing box to high temperatures (1700 F); research capabilities of Delta Wing X-15 are discussed relative to representative hypersonic transport system.
