Lubricant problem areas embrace main bearings, main engine sumps and accessories; special high temperature problems; examples of engine types in subsonic regime, in Mach 1 to 2 flight regime, and in Mach 2.5 to 3.5 regime for supersonic transports; lubrication requirements for each regime are examined with respect to available and candidate lubricants; for Mach 1-2 they can be met with selected qualified candidates; future engines require fluids with improved thermal and oxidation stability, acceptable low-temperature viscosity, and higher spontaneous ignition temperature.
