At greater than 5×104 Re, corresponding to altitudes below about 180,000 ft, hot outer inviscid wake behind bow shock wave produced by body is cooled mainly by turbulent diffusion and conduction; turbulence originates in inner wake formed by coalescence of free shear layers shed from body surface; as turbulence spreads outward, it swallows enthalpy or momentum defect originally contained in outer inviscid wake; paper attempts to analyze swallowing process, which determines rate of diffusion and cooling in wake of body.
