Procedure which uses statistical methods of data analysis which provide sole means for mathematical determination of reliability from safety aspect; suggestion is made that aircraft safety should require catastrophic failure rate of less than 10-3 after 10,000 flying hours; it is shown how requirement of this type may be met, but methods are sufficiently flexible for adaptation to any requirement considered necessary in future.
