System has been developed which permits 6 to 8 sec of physical contact with sea surface while fixed wing aircraft is flying at 500 ft altitude at 180 knots in straight path; thermistor data from buoyant sensor package is telemetered up braided nylon conductor instrument rope and package is retrieved by rope after use; repeated deployments can be made every 8 min; sea surface water samples may be taken.
