Present status in Western Europe concerning use of automotive and industrial diesel engines and their lubrication requirements are reviewed; specific output of automotive engines has risen by approximately 50% over last 15 yr; majority of medium-speed engines use direct injection; most are four-stroke, although number of two-stroke engines are used in marine applications; all high-speed automotive engines use gas oil, which corresponds to diesel distillate or white diesel in United States; consideration is given to relevance of internationally accepted lubricant specifications in fulfilling requirements and inadequacies of these specifications are discussed.
