Propulsion research problems expected to be encountered in developing required new propulsion technology are examined in following areas -- general aviation aircraft, V/STOL aircraft, subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic aircraft; primary research problems for general aviation aircraft are not propulsion oriented; they are associated with safety, airport and airspace control, communications, all-weather landing, collision avoidance, and control system; it is concluded that requirements generated by aircraft transportation system will indicate desired type of aircraft and propulsion system; final system selection will probably be made on cost-effective basis.
