This document is the third periodic ethical report of the project XP-DITE. It shows how it was ensured during the last project period that all research within XP-DITE adheres to the relevant principles of responsible research. In accordance with the EU Commission's research ethical guidelines, the main part of this document focuses on the following three topics: 1. (Informed) Consent with regard to the field tests and sub-system testing 2. Data protection issues with regard to the field tests and sub-system testing 3. Risk of unethical abuse of the technologies developed in the project With regard to the first two points, i.e. (informed) consent and data protection aspects, the second periodic ethical report included the development of a project baseline. This baseline was updated in this report to not only include baselines for informed consent, but also under which conditions implicit consent may be sufficient and when consent may be considered optional. The updated baseline is documented in this report. A detailed report with regard to the two field tests for validation (proofs-of-concept) is part of a separate document, deliverable D7.4 (Compliance with ethical requirements of the field tests). For the sake of completeness, an overview over this is also included in this document. Furthermore, this document reports on how informed consent and data protection aspects were handled during sub-system testing. Regarding the third point, this document continues reporting on the minimal research ethical risks that were identified in the last periodic ethical report for the project’s component development activities. As has been practiced for the last report, the members of the Ethical Advisory Board (EAB) have reviewed and commented on a draft version of this document, especially with regard to the conclusions drawn in XP-DITE's ethical work package on research ethical matters. In case more detailed information was needed on any matter, the EAB was provided with all information requested. The comments were then included unabridged in the Annex. The resulting document was then submitted as the third periodic ethical report. This process was agreed upon by the EAB in the first project period. There was the possibility on behalf of the EAB to change this at any time during the project. At the end of the project, we foresee for none of the potential issues identified a specific research ethical risk that makes it necessary to implement mitigation processes. For two of the potential issues identified, we foresee a specifiable, but minimal research ethical risk or adequate mitigation processes are already in place. For all other potential issues identified, we do not foresee a plausible research ethical risk for the future. For the project as a whole, we conclude that the relevant standards for responsible research have been met throughout the project.
